Rest Day!

Whether your training for sports, ANW, or just trying to stay healthy it is always important to make sure that you have rest days throughout the week! Thursday and Sunday are my usual rest days. This allows my body to recover after a few days of strenuous workouts, and also prepare for the next day of training. I'm definitely sore from all the climbing and training, so I was very excited that today was my rest day!

My rule of thumb for rest days is to eat a little less, since you do not need the extra calories for your workout, and pretty much be a coach potato to allow your body to have a full recovery. You also want to make sure that you get a good amount of sleep and hydrate yourself. Just because you are not working out does not mean you should stop drinking water for the day! Carbonated drinks do not count as good hydration so try to stay away from them as much as you can. The best way to make sure your drinking water, whether your working out or not, is to just carry around a water bottle with you all the time and refill it.

Anyway this is just a quick post so make sure that you enjoy your rest days, but also keep your body hydrated for your next day of training!

Climbing Soothes the Soul

I went climbing today, and let me just say that today was a VAST improvement from Monday! I regained my muscle memory so I did not burn out so quickly like I did on Monday and I was able to climb harder routes! I always start my climbs with easy routes just so get warmed up then move to the more challenges routes. Once I feel like my arms are going to fall off I go back to the easy routes just as a cool down.

I climbed my first route (V1) and wouldn't you know the calluses on my hands ripped off. It was a really nice way to start off my day (definitely being sarcastic here), but I was not going to let that stop me from climbing harder routes cause I was feeling so great!

I always climb during mid-day so I can beat the rush of high school kids that all climb after school. There is usually not many people bouldering at that time besides some older people who might I say are very good! Today we were all trying out figure out how to do this V2 problem because it was actually really hard. It's the type of problem where you go fully horizontal on the wall, then have to switch to a vertical climb the rest of the way up. I couldn't get it, but I'm hoping next week that I can figure it out!

After climbing a couple V2's and trying that really hard one, I moved on to V3's. Now I have not completed a V3 in about six months because I have been limited on how much I can climb due to school and a bunch of other things. I still try them all the time but I don't get very far. Today was the first day that I got really close to completing a V3. I was only one hold away!

I tried to climb this route a few more times, but my arms were spent so I am making it my goal for next week to complete this route! I am very proud of how much better my climbing has gotten it just the past few days. When you eat healthy and stick with your training then you will definitely see the results!

Workout Playlist

For my workout today, I did the bicycle for 45 minutes. There are a lot of people who would rather workout outside than on a stationary machine, but living in Colorado, in the winter no less, you really don't get a choice. To get over the boredom of being on a stationary machine, I blast my workout playlist to get hyped up and burn more calories. What music is on my playlist you ask?

I mostly listen to alternative music so Linkin Park is definitely a must! I also have some up and coming bands like Arctic Monkeys, Capitol Cities, Ballyhoo, and Cut Copy. Also have some Hollywood Undead and Avenged Sevenfold because no workout playlist is complete without them. Lastly for cool down, I have a few slow techno songs. I highly recommend to look these songs up if you have not heard them because they are great to add to your workout playlist!

Day 1!

Today is sort of my first day of training. I started really training about three months ago but then came the holidays, and my whole family came over so I took about a good month off from serious training. So today is really my first day back to training!

I woke up this morning feeling very good and motivated to get myself back on track. For breakfast I had a nice healthy omelet with shredded cheese and diced ham and of course some coffee (I can't live without coffee) to start my day. My brother who is a sports trainer told me that eggs are the best thing to eat for breakfast because it gives you the energy you need for the rest of the day but also fills you up so you don't feel like snacking later. He also only allows me one slice of bread a day to minimize my carb intake, which at first was hard to get used to because I would eat bread in just about every meal, but after a while the cravings went away and I also felt like I had more energy throughout the day.

After breakfast I let me food digest a little then got my things ready to go to the rock climbing gym. I've only ever climbed indoors cause I'm afraid to climb outside (I know, I'm a wimp). I haven't actually climbed in about two and a half weeks, which any climber knows, is a lifetime in climbing and can really set you back. You now have to reteach your body the movements and regain your strength. Even taking just a week off can harm your climbing training. Needless to say, today was a pretty rough climbing day, but I still got through it and I'm planning to go again on Wednesday to regain my strength and movements. Right now I mostly boulder, since I do not have anyone to belay with, but bouldering does help with ANW training since there are similar movements and strength obstacles on the course.

Here are two videos of me bouldering. The first one is from today. I am little rusty since it's been a while. The second one is from about eight months ago when I was at my climbing prime.

I am climbing my first V3 in the second video which was really exciting at the time! Since I have not trained so much with climbing, I am currently bouldering V2's and some V3's but not as good as I used to. Now I am fully dedicated to both ANW training and bouldering so I will be back at that point soon enough!

Last thing. I go on spring break in nine weeks, and my family (which is HUGE) decided that we are going to have a family reunion in Tennessee (don't ask why Tennessee because I have no idea...). They recently saw me at Christmas, and of course bugged me about my weight, which is what hispanic families do... (I'm used to it by now, so I just laugh at it). Anyway only my parents, and brother know that I am training for ANW so I want to show up to Tennessee and show everyone not just how much healthier I have become but also stronger. Up until about a month ago I would be able to do one pull up, but my goal now is to be able to do three in a row by the time I see them. This is another thing that is keeping me motivated because I want to prove not only to myself but to my whole family that I am healthy and strong, and that I will fight for total victory!
